About Michael
Michael J. Miller, Esq. is a founding partner of the firm Heilig, Branigan & Miller, LLP and led the firm’s appellate practice division where he also consulted on drafting complex litigation complaints and memoranda.
Mr. Miller served for over thirty-five years in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office where, after successfully litigating both misdemeanor and felony cases, he chose to apply his legal skills to appellate work. His exemplary work with the District Attorney’s office led him to be appointed as the Bureau Chief of the Appeals Bureau where he supervised a staff of over fifteen appellate lawyers.
Mr. Miller has received numerous awards for his appellate advocacy before both state and federal appeals courts that have acknowledged his experience and prowess in actively briefing and arguing over one hundred appeals and fifty habeas corpus petitions over the course of his career, including thirteen cases before the New York State Court of Appeals and sixteen cases before the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Miller was also chosen to represent the New York State District Attorney’s Association before the United States Supreme Court.
In addition to his appellate work, Mr. Miller has been an active member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, serving on the Board of Directors (2010-2013), Chair of the Appellate Practice Committee (2004-2006) and Co-Chair of the County Court Committee (2016-2017). Mr. Miller has also published numerous articles in The Suffolk Lawyer, a publication of the Suffolk County Bar Association.
Mr. Miller also serves as the Vice-President of the Church Council for the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
